Social Media Detox.

Hello everyone, how can January be almost over already??? It's been a while since I last posted on my blog and the only explanation is; I've been having a Social Media Detox. I find myself scrolling through my phone way too often, when I could be being doing something productive with my time, or socialising with my family and friends, Or even doing something educational. So, I set myself the challenge to ditch my phone for a couple of weeks and this is what I thought of it..

When I first started my detox I found it embarrassingly difficult. I would reach for my phone literally every ten minutes, As if I thought something interesting would have happened on Instagram in that short amount of time??? However as time progressed I broke the habit of having my phone constantly in my hand and it felt great. I was aware of everything that was going on around me, I would sit with my family and talk to them, rather than talking to my friends on Facebook, and I would use my time to get things that I had been pushing to one side done.

Not only did having a social media detox improve my social life in the 'real world' I definitely noticed an improvement in my mental health. I stopped obsessing over everyone else's life and spent more time focusing on myself. I am guilty for being someone that Instagram's everything, tells everyone what I'm doing on snap chat, and constantly checking my group chats. However at the time I didn't realise how much of my life it was taking up. I noticed just how much I compared my life to others when I use social media. I would see people on holiday in Santorini and wish that I could afford to go there, and see people I know going for a meal with their friends, and wishing I had a group of friends to do that with. Instead of being grateful and loving what I have there would always be a part of me that was unhappy because I wasn't one of 'those Instagram girls.' Does that make sense?

Some of the things I did on my detox-
  • Read a book
  • Went for a walk everyday
  • Decided I wanted to go back to college
  • Realised I wanted a career change
  • Visited family
  • Watched documentaries
  • Decluttered my room
  • Decluttered the whole house
  • Spent time cooking home made meals

Now my detox is over I am definitely going to be cautious of how much time I spend on social media. Currently I still have my Facebook account deactivated, as well as my personal twitter account. I have deleted my Snapchat permanently, and I will continue to use Instagram. I had a clear out of my Instagram following so I'm not scrolling through looking at Instagram models, and 'famous people' which is so refreshing. When I'm scrolling through I get to see my friends and family members posts which are so much more valuable to me. In conclusion I bloody loved having a social media detox and I would 100% recommend it to everyone. I can see plenty more to come this year!
